No official body defines golden hour. Using one stated band, from the moment the sun is 6° above the horizon until it is 4° below it, evening golden light on the 15th of each month of 2026 lasts from 45 minutes (Naha, March) to 179 minutes (Reykjavik, July) at the weather stations we cover. Further north, it lasts longer.
How we worked it out
Golden hour has no official definition: the bodies that publish sunrise and twilight times define only sunrise, sunset and the three twilights.2 We use one stated band, the one set out by the authors of the PhotoPills app: golden light while the sun is between 6° above and 4° below the horizon, and blue hour while it is between 4° and 6° below.3
For each weather station our country and prefecture pages use, we calculated the sun's height every 30 seconds on the 15th of each month of 2026 with the NOAA Solar Calculator equations, and timed each band.1 We checked the method against the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan's published tables.4 We give lengths, not clock times, which depend on time-zone rules.

Evening figures. The morning is a near mirror image of the evening at the same place and date. A dash means the band has no evening start or end that day: in midwinter at Reykjavik the sun never climbs 6° above the horizon, so on this definition the whole short day is golden light; in midsummer there the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for the band to end. Times are for the weather station's position; a few kilometres away the light is the same, but hills and buildings can hide the sun earlier.
What these figures cannot tell you
- Whether the light will be golden. Cloud, haze and dust decide that; these are the sun's geometry only.
- Clock times. For a date and place, use the light calendar, which can add the windows to your own calendar.
- Other definitions. Some guides call golden hour roughly the hour after sunrise and before sunset; see why golden hour is not an hour.
Key takeaways
- Shortest evening golden light we found: 45 minutes, Naha in March.
- Longest: 179 minutes, Reykjavik in July.
- Blue hour on the same convention is far shorter than golden light.
- What we would skip: planning a shoot around “one hour”. How long the light lasts depends on where you are and the time of year.

The sun positions are our own calculation with NOAA's published equations, checked against Japan's national observatory; the band is the PhotoPills authors'; twilight definitions are the US Naval Observatory's. See how we research.
- Method: NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, Solar Calculation Details (the NOAA Solar Calculator equations, based on Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms), Read it. Checked 24 September 2026. NOAA notes that the calculator is no longer actively maintained and that calculated times can differ from what is observed. We used the same equations for the daylight figures on our country and prefecture pages. Our calculations; NOAA does not endorse this site.
- Twilight definitions: US Naval Observatory, Astronomical Applications Department, Rise, Set, and Twilight Definitions. Read it. Checked 24 September 2026.
- Golden and blue hour band: Germán Marquès and Antoni Cladera, Understanding Golden Hour, Blue Hour and Twilights, PetaPixel, 11 June 2014. Read it. Checked 24 September 2026.
- Independent check: National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, 暦計算室, 日の出入り tables for Tokyo, Sapporo and Naha, 2026 (国立天文台ホームページより). Our calculation at NAOJ's coordinates matched its day length to 2 minutes and its sunrise and sunset directions to half a degree on the 15th of March, June, September and December. Checked 24 September 2026.
- Station positions: the weather stations our country and prefecture pages use: WMO 1991–2020 climate normals station list (NOAA NCEI) for Europe, and the Japan Meteorological Agency's station list for Japan.
Our calculation. Minutes rounded to the nearest minute, for the 15th of each month of 2026, at each weather station's position.
