What is the weather like in Takamatsu each month?
Averaged over 1991–2020, the Takamatsu (高松) weather station, which we use for Takamatsu, is warmest in August, with an average high of 33.0 °C, and coldest in January, with an average low of 2.1 °C. Its wettest month is September (167 mm of rain on average) and its driest January (39 mm).3
In February, Kagawa's quietest month, the station's average high is 10.5 °C and its average low 2.2 °C, with 46 mm of rain. In August, the busiest, the average high is 33.0 °C.3
In February the station averages 6.7 days with at least 1 mm of rain and 144 hours of sunshine.3 On 15 February the sun is up for about 11 h there, against 13 h 25 min on 15 August.4

Which national holidays fall in Kagawa's quietest and busiest months?
Japan's national holidays apply in every prefecture. In 2025, Kagawa's quietest month, February, had three national or public holidays: National Foundation Commemoration Day (Tuesday 11 February), Emperor's Birthday (Sunday 23 February) and a public holiday (Monday 24 February, because Emperor's Birthday fell on a Sunday). Its busiest month, August, had one national or public holiday: Mountain Day (Monday 11 August).56

When do cherry blossoms and autumn leaves usually appear?
At the Japan Meteorological Agency's Takamatsu (高松) observatory, Somei-yoshino cherry trees usually start to bloom around 27 March and reach full bloom around 4 April. Maple leaves usually turn red around 23 November.7
These are 1991–2020 averages, and the date moves from year to year. In JMA's records for this station since 1953, the earliest opening was 15 March and the latest 8 April.7 Check the current season's forecast before you travel.
How often do typhoons come close?
Over 1991–2020, an average of 3.3 typhoons a year came within 300 km of a JMA weather station in the Shikoku region (四国地方), most often in September.8 In February, Kagawa's quietest month, no typhoon came this close in the 30 years; in August, the busiest, 0.9 did on average.8
JMA counts a typhoon as approaching a region when its centre comes within 300 km of any of the region's weather stations, whether or not it makes landfall. A typhoon can approach in two months, so monthly figures need not add up to the yearly one. See every region, month by month.
How seasonal is Kagawa compared with the rest of Japan?
August and October together carried 21.5% of Kagawa's nights. Across Japan's 47 prefectures, that figure ran from 17.8% in Tokyo to 27.1% in Yamanashi.1 Most prefectures sit within a few points of each other, and the figures are estimates, so small gaps between neighbours in the ranking may not be meaningful. What these figures cannot tell you
These figures are good at one thing: showing when a prefecture's licensed accommodation fills up. Five things they cannot do.
They count every guest, not only holidaymakers. Business trips are included. The survey covers hotels, ryokan, shared-room lodgings such as capsule hotels and mountain huts, and company or group lodges, all licensed to take paying guests.2
They are estimates. In 2025 every lodging with ten or more staff was surveyed, but only one in three with five to nine staff and one in nine with fewer than five. For Kagawa, the agency puts the standard error rate of the 2025 total at 2.38% and of the foreign-guest total at 3.00%. Those rates are for the full year.2
A prefecture is not a town. These totals cover the whole prefecture, so they cannot show how busy one district, shrine or station is on a given day.
Guest nights say nothing about weather or prices. The weather section uses 30-year averages from one station, not a forecast. We have not published price data, because we have not verified any.
They are one year. These are 2025 figures. From January 2026 the agency changed how it selects lodgings for the survey, so later years may not compare exactly.2
